~ English's misconceptions ~

Some common mistakes that we went through today.


A) "This pair of shoes" is considered singular because we are referring to only 1-pair.



1) That basket of fruits is very expensive.  ( Only 1 basket)

2) This group of students is from Helpfulness 4-4. (Only 1 group)

3) An army of ants is crawling up my table. (Only 1 group)




B) It's is different from its.

It's is a contraction for "it is".

Examples for it's:
1a) It's a very hot day.
      It is a very hot day. 
b) Look! It's climbing up the tree!
    Look:  It is climbing up the tree!
c) It's not my fault that I could not understand Malay.
     It is not my fault that I could not understand Malay.



Examples for its :

2a) My bird had some fruits for its dinner.
  b) The cat scratched the dog using its sharp nails.
  c) Its fur is so soft and shiny after a bath.
