Things to take note of:

1) Addition and subtraction of fraction (Denominator must be the same first!)

2) Addition and subtraction of decimals (Align the decimal point and all the place values properly!)

3)  Fill in all the ZEROS in the empty spaces after aligning the decimal point and place values!

4) Long Division of decimals (Put a decimal point after the whole number, add 2 more zeros and continue the long division!)

a)  Step 1: Find how many "3m" are there in 756m.

Take total 756m divided by "3m"  ----> 756m divided by 3m = 252

There is a total of 252 young trees.

In a circle, the number of spaces between 2 trees is equal to the number of trees.


b)  1 tree ---> $14
     252 trees ---> $14  x 252  = $3528

It costs $3528 to plant all the trees.

Step 1: Draw model.

1 Dining Table ---> 4 units
1 Chair ---> 1 unit


Step 2: Find total
1 Dining Table + 4 Chairs = 4 units + 4 units = 8 units



Step 3: Find 1 unit (1 chair)

8 units --->  $1276

1 unit ---> $1276 divided by 8 = $159.50

One chair costs $159.50.



b)  1 dining table + 6 chairs = 4 units + 6 units = 10 units

If 1 unit ----> $159.50

10 units ----> $159.50 x 10 = $1595

Collin paid $1595.

Step 1: Draw models

Step 2: Look at the models and you can see that there are 4 equal units, with the extra   2 5/6 ,  2 5/6 ,  1 3/4.


Step 3: To find the 1 unit, we must take the total and minus away 2 5/6 ,  2 5/6 ,  1 3/4.

19 5/12  -  2 5/6  - 2 5/6  - 1 3/4  = 12


Step 4:

So, 4 units ----> 12 kg

1 unit ----> 12kg divided by 4  = 3kg


Step 5:

Compare Mr Sim's model to Mrs Poh's,

Add up all the extra models

3 +  2 5/6  +  1 3/4   = 7 7/12 kg

Mrs Sim bought 7 7/12 kg more flour than Mr Poh.

Step 1: Draw models

It is printed that Benjamin is 1.4m tall.

Step 2: If you know Benjamin is 1.4m tall, you can find Kathy (0.18m shorter)
So, Kathy ----> 1.4m - 0.18m = 1.22m


Step 3: If you know Benjamin is 1.4m tall, you can also find Betty (0.3m taller)
So, Betty ----> 1.4m + 0.3m = 1.7m


Step 4: You can find the total height of Betty and Kathy now.

Total ----> Kathy + Betty
             =  1.22m + 1.7m
             = 2.92m






Question 42

Step 1: Draw models

You know that Mr Yeo has $6000. He gave his wife $2280.

Step 2: You can find how much he is left after giving his wife
Mr Yeo left ----> $6000 - $2280 = $3720



You know that he gave 5/8 of this remaining $3720 to his 3 children.

Step 3: Find 5/8 of this remaining $3720.

$3720 is cut into 8 units, so
1 unit ----> $3720 divide by 8 = $465

You know 1 unit is $465 now, so you can find 5/8 which is 5 units.
5units-----> $465 x 5  = $2325



Step 4:He gave 5/8 to his 3 children, means he gave $2325 to his 3 children.

So, 3 children ----> $2325
1 child ---->  $2324 divided by 3  = $775
